Community Projects - Scholarships

1. The Fire Eaters award one scholarship to a Lee-Davis high school senior who submits the best essay on the Confederate era. For details about the 2010 competition, contact the Camp Commander:  commander@fireeatersscv.org

2. Army of Northern Virginia Scholarship: The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Army of Northern Virginia (ANV), also awards a scholarship. The ANV scholarship is open to any high school senior, who is also a resident of one of the states of Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, or West Virginia . To read or download information about the 2010 competition, follow these links:

Multimedia Presentations:  The Fire Eaters provide a fascinating array of presentations from nationally known authors, historians and educators. These events often coincide with Camp meetings, but are sometimes scheduled at other locations. See the Camp Events page for upcoming presentations. Members of the local community are welcome as guests of the Fire Eaters and these events are provided without any admission fee.

Monument Preservation: One of principal philanthropies of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is the preservation and installation of monuments and markers. The Fire Eaters conduct several local projects both in Hanover in the Central Virginia region. The Fire Eaters Artillery Battery under Command of Compatriot Andy Smith, provided cannon salutes at the recent installation of a new monument in honor of Jewish Confederate Veterans at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.

Dixie Days and Re-enactments: The Fire Eaters, with the support of other local SCV Compatriots produce the annual Hanover Dixie Days event, a family oriented weekend that includes battle re-enactments, Confederate era history presentations, artisans and vendors of Confederate regalia. The next Dixie Days event will be in spring of 2010.

Parades: An event that is a favorite of all Fire Eater families is the annual Mechanicsville Christmas parade. Compatriots wear their Confederate era uniforms or don festive outfits, then either ride the float or enjoy a brisk march, while passing along treats to the children along the parade route.
